Performance Assessment Network, Inc. (“pan”) announced that it has been awarded a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its “Test Administration System Using the Internet.”
The testing software and process involves over 140 different functional elements defining a comprehensive method for ordering, administering, processing, and reviewing standardized tests and assessments. pan is currently working on a continuation filing with the patent office to include subsequent enhancements of the system, including functions for administering timed tests and combinations or “batteries” of tests.
The system was invented by pan co-founders David Pfenninger and Chris Hester and designed to support professional test administrators by allowing a uniform distribution of web-based testing products from multiple vendors. pan currently distributes over 400 standardized tests and assessments from 45 test publishers, as well as providing “private label” and customized test distribution and processing for the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, the Canadian Public Service Commission, Society for Human Resource Management, Procter & Gamble, and other major government, corporate, and educational clients.
“The U.S. patent codifies what the test and measurement industry has known for some time, that pan is the superior Internet testing and assessment solution,“ commented pan Chairman and CEO David Pfenninger. “While we are primarily interested in the patent as a protective device and a marketing support, it is interesting to think about the comprehensive claims and their implications. There are assessment standards being posited by human resource – XML groups, for example, that would seem to imply our patent claims, as would some of the vendor systems that have copied pan design and technology over the years. We’ll have to review these things. But the reality is that pan defined the best-practices for Internet assessment and testing long ago and has moved on to even more sophisticated applications of web technology to the problems of testing and assessment.”
